How to prepare when entry rules change

Begin with the responsible authority

Use the destination government's immigration, border or foreign-affairs service. Read the page for your nationality and travel purpose. An announcement date, start date and transition period can be different, so record each one separately.

Confirm who is affected

A new rule may apply only to visa-exempt visitors, certain passport holders, particular ports of entry or journeys beginning after a stated date. Residence permits, transit and children can follow different rules.

Check existing applications and approvals

Do not assume that a rule change cancels or preserves an existing approval. Follow the authority's transition guidance and use its official status or contact channel when your case is not covered.

Keep a reliable record

Save the official reference number, confirmation and the page that states the rule. Note when you checked it. Revisit the official source shortly before departure because requirements can change again.

  • Confirm nationality and passport type.
  • Check the effective date and any transition period.
  • Review route and transit points.
  • Verify rules for every traveller, including children.
  • Use the official service to apply where available.
