New Zealand's entry route depends on passport and travel circumstances. Visa-waiver travellers generally need an NZeTA, visa-required travellers need the appropriate visa, and almost everyone entering New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

Who needs a visa or travel document?

Visa-waiver status does not remove the NZeTA requirement where it applies, and the New Zealand Traveller Declaration is a separate border declaration.

Transit requirements: Transit passengers may need an NZeTA or transit visa depending on passport and route. Airside transit passengers who remain in the Auckland transit area do not complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

Electronic travel authority

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)

Eligible visa-waiver travellers, certain transit passengers and other travellers covered by New Zealand's NZeTA rules.

Allows

Travel to New Zealand to seek entry under the relevant visa-waiver or transit conditions; an NZeTA is not itself a visitor visa.

Validity

Two years for most travellers, unless a shorter validity applies.

Maximum stay

Visa-waiver visitors are generally granted up to three months per visit, or up to six months for UK passport holders, subject to entry permission and the applicable rules.

Most NZeTA requests are processed within 72 hours. Apply well before travel.

Visitor visa

New Zealand Visitor Visa

Travellers who need a Visitor Visa rather than an NZeTA or visa-waiver entry.

Allows

Tourism, visiting family or friends and other permitted visitor activities. Study of up to three months is allowed; ordinary local employment is not.

Validity

The visa issued may be single or multiple entry and its validity is shown on the approval.
