Frequently asked questions

What is ESTA, and is it a visa?

ESTA is a travel authorisation under the Visa Waiver Program, not a visa. Your passport and travel circumstances determine whether this route is suitable. Check eligibility before starting.

Who can use ESTA?

ESTA is for eligible citizens or nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries who meet the programme requirements and are travelling for an eligible short visit.

Some travel histories or other circumstances can make a traveller ineligible for ESTA and require a visa instead.

Do I still need ESTA if I do not need a U.S. visa?

Yes. Visa Waiver Program travel requires an approved ESTA before travel.

How will I receive my ESTA?

Once approved, the ESTA is electronically linked to the passport used in the application. We’ll send you the result by email and keep the available record in your account.

How long can I stay in the United States with ESTA?

Visa Waiver Program visits are limited to 90 days or less. ESTA itself is generally valid for up to 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

When should I apply for ESTA?

Apply at least 72 hours before travel. U.S. authorities recommend applying in advance rather than waiting until departure is close. You can begin at any time before departure.

Do children need their own ESTA?

Yes. Every Visa Waiver Program traveller, including children and infants, needs their own approved ESTA and an eligible e-passport.

Do I need ESTA if I am transiting the United States?

Yes, if you are transiting under the Visa Waiver Program. The United States does not provide a general immigration-free transit route for VWP travellers.

What happens if my ESTA is not approved?

If ESTA is not approved, you may need to apply for an appropriate U.S. visa before travelling. An ESTA refusal does not itself grant another route of entry.

Can I extend a Visa Waiver Program stay in the United States?

ESTA does not provide an extension mechanism for a normal Visa Waiver Program stay. If you need a different length or purpose of stay, check the visa route that applies before travel.

What does the paid ESTA service include?

Our optional private service helps you prepare and check your ESTA application and handle the authorised submission. Review our service fee and any government charge before payment. You can also apply directly through the official ESTA service.

What happens after my ESTA application is submitted?

U.S. authorities assess your application. If authorised, the ESTA is linked to the passport used in the request. Pending or unsuccessful requests do not authorise travel, and final admission is decided at the border.
