Schengen Tourist Short-Stay Visa how it works

Understand preparation, review and the official next step.

Open the official service →

Start by checking your route

Some non-EU nationals need a short-stay visa; nationality and traveller-specific exemptions must be checked. This route covers tourism only. Apply to the consulate of your main destination. For several countries, this is usually the longest stay, or the first country if stays are equal. The consulate must generally cover your country of legal residence. Applications normally open six months before travel and must be lodged at least 15 days before departure. An appointment may be required.

Review your information

Check passport details, the service-specific questions and required documents. Complete any missing answers before authorising the next step.

  • Passport valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen area
  • Completed harmonised application form and compliant photograph
  • Travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation
  • Itinerary, accommodation, financial means and evidence of intention to return
  • Additional destination-specific documents and biometrics where required

Submission or customer handoff

The service instructions explain whether staff can submit or whether you must complete a government payment, appointment or submission yourself.

Keep the government confirmation

A government receipt or reference records submission. The authority controls processing and decisions; private assistance does not guarantee approval.
