Apply when you make your travel plans
Request ESTA before travel and allow at least 72 hours for the government response. You can apply before making final bookings. An urgent departure does not provide priority processing or guarantee authorisation.

Saving your details or paying our fee does not submit ESTA. Complete the questions and required images, review your answers and authorise staff filing. The processing period begins when CBP receives the official request.
Pending is different from approved
CBP may record Authorization Pending, Authorization Approved or Travel Not Authorized. Submission does not mean approval. Wait for the actual authorisation before relying on ESTA for travel. Approval permits travel under the Visa Waiver Program; admission remains an immigration decision.
